Myriad’s Violin and Viola teachers in San Mateo believe every student can succeed with the right tools. Success-based lessons and purposeful home practice mean daily improvement. Students who love their violin and viola lessons and string teachers do take ownership of their progress. We take the time to understand each student’s needs and help them set their own goals, so children, teens, and adults can carry their music with them for life. Ages 6 – Adults, All Levels
Our private violin and viola lessons are one-on-one instruction with lesson lengths of 30 minutes, 45 minutes or 1 hour. For ages 12+, we recommend a 45 min lesson length. If you do not see a 45-minute or 60-minute open lesson time here, simply register for a 30-minute spot then call our friendly Arts Admin Team to inform them of your intention, and we’ll help adjust your schedule.
We teach all styles, including classical repertoire, successful method book literature, folk songs inherent in the string literature and books, jazz, contemporary, pop, and musical theater. Students learn healthy, tension-free technique, music reading, theory, and smart practice strategies, while choosing their own fun projects along the way. Whether playing for personal enjoyment or pursuing a college-prep path, every student at Myriad progresses, gains confidence, and finds joy collaborating with their teacher each week.
All Private Lessons and Violin Teams are year-round enrollment / 12 month classes. Your preferred lesson time is reserved exclusively or you, year-to-year. No need to re-register each time. Need to miss a lesson? It’s easy, with our make-up link. Sign-up for make-up lessons anytime. Make-up opportunities never expire, with continued active enrollment.
Violin Teams: Ages 6 – 9
Popular Class Recommendation for Beginners
Many of our beginning violins, ages 6-9, thrive in our Violin Teams classes, which are small classes with 2-3 students, together with 1 teacher. Violin Teams blend individual instruction with group activities in music theory and collaboration. Team students progress at the same pace as Private Lesson students, then typically transition into Private Lessons around age 9-10. Beginner Violin Team students demonstrate strong engagement in class and success with home practice assignments between lessons in this popular team + private focus format.
Violin Ensemble at Myriad
String Players enrolled in private lessons are eligible to join our Violin / String Ensemble
Are you a violinist or violist, 9 years old or older with private lesson experience for at least 2 years? Join our fun, vibrant Violin Ensemble! These young violinists have so much fun together every week. Our savvy, experienced conductor with her students to choose engaging, dynamic contemporary repertoire, practicing for holiday concerts, and local community events. String players who play with others improve exponentially faster in all areas of the violin and viola, while also having a great time every week. Join the Violin Ensemble today – limited spots!
If your child is 9 years or older with at least 2 years of private lesson experience, he or she is eligible for Violin Ensemble on Fridays.

Along with teaching our students how to become good string players with healthy, lasting violin and viola technique, we provide as many tools as possible to engage happy, productive home practicers. We’ve created 100’s of practice videos for our students, recorded at slower practice tempos with a model of relaxed, tension-free neck, shoulders, arms, and hands with relaxed, healthy bow technique. Avoid going down the Youtube rabbit hole of poorly executed string instrument videos, tumbling along at speeds that mislead impressionable students. Learn alongside these Myriad videos, a great practice aid for our late elementary – late intermediate students.

Private mentoring is the way to go. We provide our string students of all ages with a fun weekly lesson. We provide personalized tips and fun activities to take home. For parents, we have many tools to help you know if your child is excelling. Parents are provided with a “Smart Practicing Guide” and “Correct Violin Home Set-up” guidelines. Follow the curriculum your child is learning and celebrate their success.
Practice together with Myriad’s string teachers playing students’ songs on YouTube at a slow practice tempo that students can actually follow. We created a special YouTube channel just for you! Myriad’s Director and other skilled professional accompanists give your child further coaching to prepare for performances. These creative, encouraging violin and viola teachers, together with the unique tools at Myriad really look out for the challenges young string players encounter.
